The Latest from the BDC

Armitage Architecture

A couple exciting projects that we recently designed are a church renovation for The Well Buffalo in Getzville, N.Y. and an adaptive reuse project on Transit Road in Cheektowaga for a financial adviser's office. Another notable achievement, Penny Armitage, Principal Architect, was recently mentioned in Business First's "Who's Building WNY.”

David W. DeBoy, Architect

Modern Design and Preservation

The typical city building can be as much as 100 years old. Many of these buildings are in disrepair, but recent trends have recognized the beauty of these structures. David W. DeBoy, Architect emphasizes creative and cost-effective modern designs and thoughtful preservation complimenting the original building architecture, while evoking a fresh new look. While achieving owners’ building needs, new façades and interior spaces are designed to add value to the entire building project, from the quality of interior space to the exterior image and city streetscape.

Buffalo West Side Building Storefront:

Stainless perforated canopy, large wood frame, glass sliding doors and new aluminum and glass entry are all integrated with newly exposed building structure and the original architectural exterior.

Buffalo Elmwood Ave. Building Addition:

Horizontal board siding, large sliding glass windows, natural wood entrance accent and other traditional materials are used for a simple modern design while fitting contextually within the historic village streetscape.

North Tonawanda Historic Main Street Building:

Modern materials of aluminum storefront and glass, new brick and concrete and composite wood products were used for a traditional design located in a designated preservation district. No historic photos remained, so the façade design was derived from the existing architecture and the owner’s desire for a clean, maintainable façade.

On the boards

We have begun working on an adaptive reuse project of a historic structure, in the Downtown Buffalo Niagara Street Corridor. It will feature 35 new apartment units with first-floor commercial space. The buildings feature structures that date back to 1886. We will be working with the State Historic Preservation Office on restoration and the new build out. Mercedes-Benz of Buffalo has completed a facilities master plan that looks towards long range business growth, upgrades to efficiency and customer loyalty.

Under Construction

The Apartments at the Hub project is working towards finishing construction by August of this year. It is an adaptive reuse of historic building infrastructure into 50 market rate apartments. The first-floor commercial spaces we encompass a retail bike shop, retail fitness center and a restaurant pub. The two combined buildings have a rich history in being a well-known turn-of-the-century candy company that was one of the first of its kind to use electrical power production instead of steam. One of the structures was designed by Louise Bethune who was the first American woman to work as a professional architect.

Resurgence Brewery Company, located along the Niagara Street Corridor in Buffalo, is gearing up to begin brewing beer by early spring. This project is one of the many local microbreweries that are being founded in Buffalo. The space will incorporate a new tasting area, a bar, stripped down food menu and an outdoor beer garden.

Katie Schneider Photography

At Katie Schneider Photography, we continue to be busy with headshots, architectural photography, families and wonderful commercial clients. It was great to take some time and put two consecutive shows together at the Buffalo Club. The first show centered on Buffalo from a different perspective, and the second on winter...pretty timely this year.

Shooting for the shear joy of recording my personal "angle" without a client to please was freeing and surprisingly introspective. Through the shows, I was able to work on images that I had shot, and left on my computer (as many of us do). It was great to see them, relive the moments and prepare them for the shows.

The educational piece of the show is that I continue to bring my "art and angle" to every shoot. If you are in the neighborhood, come on in! I'd love to show you my work and give you a tour of the Collaborative as well as my studio.

NEST Interiors

Concierge Dental Group, Williamsville, N.Y. - Concierge Dental Group was designed with the anxious patient in mind. The interior was created to soothe dental anxiety, creating a space that reflected a spa rather than a typical dental office. The office has experienced an overwhelming positive response from its patients on how the interior design has affected their experience. The Wells Fargo 2013 Dental Office Design Competition recognized this project for excellence in dental office design.

Schneider Design

Since 2009, the Buffalo Design Collaborative has been assisting St. Jude the Apostle Church with the creation of a new parish center. Our BDC project team was made up of lead architects Schneider Design Architects, PC, project-production architects K-Arc Design and landscape partner F&S Design.

Working closely with pastor, Fr. Ted Jost, and the St. Jude building committee, the BDC design team offered a series of preliminary schematic designs to identify the best location for the 11,000 square-foot addition. These design concepts were revised on numerous occasions in response to parish and community input and budget constraints.

The building was engineered using a prefabricated main building structure to reduce costs. R&P Oak Hill was retained as construction manager and after winter bidding and value engineering were completed, construction began in the spring of 2013. The design and construction team were successful in bringing the project to full completion under budget and ahead of schedule.

Schneider Development

Schneider Development is very excited and proud to announce plans to redevelop 285-295 Niagara Street. This development, which is located within the first stretch of the City of Buffalo’s Niagara Street Gateway Streetscape Project between Virginia Virginia Street and Niagara Square, is set to begin construction this summer.

Schneider Development specializes in the adaptive reuse and renovation of derelict and historically significant buildings. The 285-295 Niagara Street project encompasses the adaptive redevelopment of 60,000 square feet of historic infrastructure into a mix of 35-40 apartments and interactive ground floor retail space. Much of the original 1848 Gothic Revival storefront façade is still intact and will be restored to provide a great retail space that opens onto and complements the new streetscape enhancements. The project will also include a rooftop deck, offering panoramic views of Lake Erie, the Downtown Buffalo Skyline and the West Side. Construction is expected to start in late summer 2014, with completion slated for summer 2015.
